![]() ![]() ![]() The movie is rife with symbolism and inconsistencies, many of which deviate from Stephen King’s intentions in the novel.ĭespite this, not everyone loved the film. Many scenes feel strange and feature images that are not fully explained. This is due to Kubrick’s intentional (or not) use of ambiguity. It has far out-reached its “cult classic” status, featuring on many lists of the “best movies ever made.”įamously, many viewers have engaged in conspiracy theory-like speculation about the film. Today, ‘ The Shining‘ is considered to be one of, if not the, most influential horror movies ever made. ![]() There are several versions of the film, each cutting the length down from a maximum of 146 minutes to the final 119-minute European version of the movie. ![]() It took in $47 million dollars at the box office over its run. Even as the skin sagged, so the white facial paste was layered on as she was wheeled before her audience. Elizabeth I was England's new protectress and was portrayed in those precisely calculated iconic terms for a newly Protestant population starved of the Catholic imagery it had once rather liked. England's only clever queen taught her court and people to see her as a return of the Virgin. The survival has involved adroit literary propaganda and use of the visuals. This being so, monarchy is a good subject for a historian who asks the central question: how did Alfred's successors manage to get away with it and still be here? Out of this equation have grown some of the most powerful English myths - those of national Blitz-like solidarity, of smoothly purposeful institutional evolution, and cheerfully harmonious relationships between the classes. The history of England is, alas, also the story of her monarchy. If you like cosmic horror, forests that want to eat you, and very sad very pretty boys and very tired very done with everything girls then i have a book for you.Įdit: 6.19.19: ~we have a cover~ and i'm just going to come out ahead of arcs and put the necessary content warnings here because we're dealing with about the same level of blood/self harm as Wicked Saints, about the same level of alcoholism (Serefin is Having A Time), i guess the same level of gore? That one is rough because each person's understanding of what gore is in a book is different, I didn't think WS was particularly gory but some readers did! So! Keep that in mind I think RG is about the same level in regards to that, some minor drug use as a magic avenue (it's mushrooms, but still!), the big one in this book is body horror/eye horror. It's weird! it's cerebral! everyone is sad! it nearly killed me! it's a good 100 pages longer than WICKED SAINTS! ![]() ![]() Characters, places, and incidents are products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Some reviewers have said the blog is better than the book. If it's not, you'll be on a rant about Ellen's many faults, her exaggeratedly impossible children, her husband who is portrayed as generally useless, and a collection of relatives that would make me emigrate to another country and change my name. This book seems to be an expanded version of a blog the author writes in the British media titled Peter & Jane, the names of Ellen's two children. I realize it could definitely be not everyone's glass of Chardonnay. Satire, readers, satire! That said, I found Why Mummy Drinks laugh-out-loud funny truly the kind of book I can't put down. No, I do not really believe that these mums need a whip and a chair to control their uncontrollable offspring. I first noticed this years ago with The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy by Fiona Neill. ![]() There is a certain type of English author who writes about her children as if they are wild animals. Loved this book I follow the authors comedic blog which is a hilarious and totally relatable account of daily middle-class life. My lasting impression of Why Mummy Drinks is that it is satire, the classic British "send-up" and not to be taken seriously for a minute as the real life of an English mother/wife/part time IT worker. ![]() ![]() His sister wasn’t at all bothered about pink fluffy things or butterflies until she felt she “should” be. Ros and James found their son loved pushing a toy buggy as a toddler, but not once he got to nursery.
